In A Nutshell

Fiona Dunlop is a seasoned travel and food-writer who has been ‘abroad’ for much of her life. She doesn’t count countries but aims to dig deep beneath the surface of the places she visits. Food has increasingly become her focus, without forgetting art, architecture and design. Andalucia (Spain) is her second home, but French her second language!

Asymmetry: This pic I took back in 2017 in the West Bank shows a Palestinian woman farmer in an altercation with an IDF officer.
Big versus little, machine gun versus farming tools, oppressor v oppressed, power v downtrodden.

Her olive grove had just been trashed by settlers, olives stolen & dirty old mattresses & rubbish dumped.
In the end she was forced to abandon her planned harvest & struggle back down the hill to her village with unused ladders, sacks etc. The illegal settlers remained - triumphant.

The shocking scene two days ago in the West Bank v

The shocking scene two days ago in the West Bank village of Burin. Israeli soldiers now patrol night & day to intimidate & occasionally make arrests. They even shoot Palestinian teenagers - dead. This is a peaceful village that I know well, harassed by extremist settlers for years. Now villagers daren't go out & certainly can't harvest their olives - for many their only livelihood. A life?

Guess who was here? 😳25 years ago Blair rolled up in Cordoba for a copa with his friend, the guitarist Paco Peña. His name lives on in the fabulous @bodegas_campos, a rambling restaurant / tapas bar / wine cellar dating from 1908. A big favourite of mine that featured in my book New Tapas - another life!

Córdoba's Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucia (C3A) - a spectacular building on the south side of the Guadalquivir river houses vast, playful spaces for installations, multimedia works & workshops. Nieto y Sobejano designed it to reference the architecture of Al-Andalus in 21st c brutalist style, above all in the 100-m long facade of 1319 hexagonal openings. At night this lights up in an incredible show... tbc.
inside an intriguingly iconoclastic exhibition by Victoria Gil - "Sewing the River" runs till March 2024. And free entry! A definite must
