About me

Fiona Dunlop is a seasoned travel and food-writer who has been ‘abroad’ for much of her life. She doesn’t count countries but aims to dig deep beneath the surface of the places she visits. What a find! @lamar_oysters cleans out the pincho palate with any of their 15 types of oysters from Cantabria (in pic), Ireland & France. And they slip down nicely with a glass of Cantabrian (as opposed to Galician) albarino. Even better, the owner is Spain’s champion oyster-shucker!

Renzo Piano’s Centro Botin, finished in 2017, perches by the bay of Santander. Another of Spain’s starchitect buildings, attempting to ape Bilbao’s Guggenheim effect without much of a programne - beautifully designed & sited nonetheless

Unusual pinchos in this wonderful old vermuteria - 80 odd years old, but not these little mouthfuls! Seaweed bread forms the base topped by thyme jelly & a juicy Cantabrian anchovy. Delicate & delicious- perfect with a vermouth

A rare 3D piece in Steve McQueen’s engrossing exhibition @tatemodern - full of insight, poetry & poignancy. This sculpture, Weight, 2016, is a prison bed draped in a 24-carat goldplated mosquito net - first shown at Reading Prison where Oscar Wilde was once incarcerated, referencing 50 years of partial decriminalisation of homosexuality.
